Spotting signs of dyslexia at the first parents evening

School can be an exciting but also daunting period for a child as well as the parents/guardians, whether that be starting a new school or going into a new year group.  

October is often when the first parents evening of the academic year takes place. This is a time for teachers to talk about how your child is performing in school but it’s also a time to voice any concerns you may have.  

You may have noticed indicators of dyslexia when your child is at home doing day to day tasks or when they are completing their homework. It is also more likely that your child will have dyslexia if your family has a history of it.  

Dyslexia shouldn’t hold a child back from getting the most out of their education which is why if you spot any signs and believe your child may have dyslexia, seeking guidance is important. A dyslexia diagnosis is important and as soon as a child has this diagnosis, they can access help at school and start their journey for a brighter future.  

 What are the signs? 

The signs of dyslexia differ from person to person and your child may not display them all. Those with dyslexia have different strengths and weaknesses.  

What are the common signs of dyslexia in Primary School children?  

  • Difficulty learning to read, write and spell. 
  • Difficulty remembering sequences such as the alphabet and months of the year. 
  • Having difficulty telling left from right. 
  • Difficulty copying accurately from the board or a textbook. 
  • Having difficulty remembering and following oral instructions. 
  • Persistent and continued reversing of letters and figures, e.g. ’15’ for ‘51’, ‘b’ for ‘d’. 
  • Taking longer than average over written work. 
  • Lack of self-confidence and increasing frustration. 
  • In other ways are very bright and alert. 


What are the common signs of dyslexia when children are of Secondary School age?  

  • Inconsistent spelling. 
  • Difficulty with planning and writing essays. 
  • A tendency to get ‘tied up’ using long words, e.g. preliminary, philosophical. 
  • A tendency to confuse verbal instructions, places, times and dates. 
  • Greater difficulty in learning a foreign language. 
  • Low self-esteem. 
  • Frustration which has led to behavioural or emotional difficulties. 
  • Disorganised at home and school 


Raise your concerns 

If you think your child is struggling and not developing at the same rate as other children their age, trust your instincts and ask for advice. Talk to your child’s teacher, they are qualified and experienced so they may have also spotted some signs in your child.  

The teacher may refer you to the school’s special educational needs coordinator (SENCo) who can discuss your concerns further.  

Questions to ask the school 

  • “How is my child coping with the different subjects and activities at school?” 
  • “What support is available at school for my child if they are struggling?” 
  • “Is my child able to have an assessment for dyslexia?” 
  • “Can the school organise an assessment for dyslexia, or do I need to involve someone else/arrange this myself?” 
  • “What do you have in place at the school if my child is diagnosed with dyslexia?” 


Dyslexia can present challenges, but an early diagnosis ensures your child has access to the correct support, so they feel confident at school and can excel in their learning. People with dyslexia often also have skills in other areas such as creative thinking and problem solving.
